Want to Grow Your YouTube Channel? Stop Comparing Your Channel to Others

When you are first starting your channel or even if you have been at it for quite some time, you may be tempted to look at other channels to see how fast they are growing.

Or you may be comparing how many views these other channels get.

Now it’s natural to see what other channels are doing because you can learn from them, but if you are comparing them to your channel, that’s where the danger lies. 🗡

One of the most destructive things you can do as a YouTuber is comparing yourself to others.

When you look at the other YouTubers and see how big their channels are and then you compare yourself to them, it’s only going to make you feel bad.

Most of the big YouTubers have been at it for quite some time. YouTube takes a long time to build and those that got started early have an advantage.

It’s natural to try and compare but if those comparisons make you feel bad, it’s a good idea to stop.

Everyone starts at the beginning and as you make steady weekly progress, you will continue to grow. Keep at it!

How to Make Content for Your YouTube Niche by Thinking Outside In

One of the most difficult but important ideas for YouTube success is being very clear about your niche.

It can be hard to pick a focus.

YouTube works best if you have a specific niche that you are speaking to. It’s even better if you have a clear idea of who is your ideal client and subscriber and think deeply about what they need to hear or learn from YOU.

And then let’s go even further. Once you have this person in mind, you are going to think, Outside In.

So what do I mean by that? You are going to think of what they need, want, and wish they knew what you know.  This is different from creating content that may be re-purposed content from other social media.

The different focus will attract people to your content because it’s all about THEM.

Often times YouTube creators focus on what they create and they just hope people will like it. By being clear with your niche and being dedicated to understanding them, by thinking outside in, you will be more likely to connect with them because it is all about them and not you.

And that is how you grow your channel. 🎯

Why Your YouTube Channel Isn’t Growing – Do This Instead

Are you struggling to grow your YouTube channel?  Are you still getting few views or subscribers? If this is how you are feeling… this video is for you!

Are you struggling to build your YouTube channel? It’s not all about making and uploading videos. There is so much more on the back end that you need to do so your channel and videos get found.

YouTube is not like social media, where you see the content you follow on your feed. YouTube growth strategies help you to get found through search.

After your family, friends, colleagues and clients subscribe to your channel, it won’t grow anymore unless you set your channel up to be found by search. That is how you grow your channel.

But sadly, so many channels with good content languish because people do not understand how YouTube works.

YouTube is a great way to advertise your business and coaching programs but if your channel and videos are getting few views, it’s not because your content is bad.  It’s usually because you don’t understand how YouTube works.

If you are uploading random things, like re-purposing Facebook lives, the YouTube algorithm won’t know what to do with your content.

Also, the YouTube audience is fickle and if you don’t get to the point right away, or you are just saying hi to your people on a Facebook live, people will click off.

YouTube works best if you are clear about WHO you are creating content for. We call this your Ideal Client. Think about what THEY want and need to hear from YOU.

Next, to grow your channel you MUST upload regularly. If you only upload when you feel like it, your channel will not grow very much.

This is a big one… not understanding that YouTube is tied to Google. The way your channel grows is by creating Titles for your videos using terms that people are searching for.

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is KEY to growing on YouTube.

And last, Thumbnails need to be clear and visually appealing so when your video shows up on search, people will click on it.

Check for these issues:

1. Be clear about your channel’s focus and don’t use YouTube as a place to repurpose random Facebook lives.

2. Regular uploads are required if you want to grow your channel.

3. Create titles that people are searching for with the words they would use.

4. Create thumbnails that are visually appealing so people will click when they see it.

Unfortunately, most people don’t learn these concepts in school, which is why their channels aren’t getting many views or subs. YouTubers need to grow new skills. But you can learn and that is why I have started my YouTube coaching business.

Are You Doing YouTube Wrong? – Common Mistakes and Misunderstanding

One of the biggest misconceptions new YouTubers have is that they just need to make great videos and then they will be set.

Or people obsess about getting the perfect gear, cameras, microphones that it takes them years to start filming.

There are very important protocols that must be understood and practiced in order to get your channel off the ground…

and it has nothing to do with filming…

I see so many coaches and businesses on YouTube and most of them are not doing very well.

They just don’t get how YouTube works.

They think it’s all about making good content and then it will magically get discovered.

It doesn’t work that way!

I’ve checked out channels of people who have done challenges with me on my Facebook group and they still don’t get it.

So many mistakes and misunderstanding which is common for new YouTubers but also people who have been around for a while but they still don’t get it.

Since they unknowingly have so many mistakes and so many things wrong, they start thinking that YouTube is not for them.

But in truth, they are just doing things wrong. Because if you know what to do and you’re consistent, YouTube WILL work for you!

The main mistakes are:

1. Not uploading regularly
2. Not understanding how channels grow
3. Not getting how search works
4. Not understanding how to make search worthy titles
5, Not getting thumbnail strategies or no thumbnail at all

And that is why I am a YouTube coach so I can help people stop doing it wrong so they can learn to do it right!

YouTube Monetization – Adsense & Watch Time Hours

Wouldn’t it be great to get paid for making videos? That’s the dream, right?

Unfortunately, YouTube has a high standard to meet before they will allow you to monetize your videos with ads.

I’ve been monetized for years on my Vocal Splendor Studios channel and I now make between $400 to $1000 each month in ad revenue.  And soon my second channel, Cosmic Splendor, is on track to be monetized by this summer.

But while you are waiting, there are other ways to monetize your channel.

It’s every YouTuber’s dream to make money on YouTube.  But how easy is it REALLY?

When I created my first channel in 2010, anyone could apply for monetization. If your channel checked out, you could start making ad revenue right away!

Times have changed. All YouTube creators must reach a standard before YouTube will invite you into the partner program.

The standards are:

  • 2-step verification enabled
  • No active community guidelines strikes
  • 1000 subscribers
  • 4000 watch hours

And the 4000 watch hours must occur within a 12 month period.

The standards are high. This is why being consistent by uploading weekly, will get you to your goals.  YouTube is a marathon.  I like to call it a building game.

In the meantime, while you are making videos and building your channel, there are other things you can do.

1. I started my 1st channel as a voice teacher and I started to get online clients in 2011 directly from my  channel.

2. You can have affiliate sales and share your favorite products in your videos and in the descriptions.

3. You can create custom clothing with your logos and art and link the stores to your YouTube channel.

4. You can apply for adsense now, which you will need for when you join as a YouTube partner. Your adsense account will allow you to put ads on your blog or website and also allows you to create paid ads for your business.

In the meantime, keep making great videos! Slow and steady wins the race!

In this video, you will learn:

  1. Where to find the monetization menu in YouTube Studio
  2. How to use the guideline clocks to show how close or far you are from monetization.
  3. Why subscriber count and watch time are key for monetization.
  4. Other ways to monetize your channel with attracting clients, affiliate sales, merch salesand more.

New people are finding your videos every day. The more videos you make, the more people will find them.

That’s how it works!
